VDI PERFORMANCE COMPARISON: SAMSUNG SOLID-STATE DRIVES VS.

SAS DRIVES IN A DELL POWEREDGE R720

Today’s servers are more powerful than ever and are ideally suited for

your virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). They offer the latest in processing

power, memory speed, and storage technologies. The storage technologies you

select, in particular, can have a profound effect on the number of users each

server can support. You can use standard SAS drives in your servers or you can

upgrade—for only a modest additional investment—in Samsung solid-state

drives (SSDs).

In the Principled Technologies (PT) labs, we tested a Dell PowerEdge R720

server configured with both SAS hard drives and Samsung SSDs to quantify the

advantage SSDs can deliver. We found that this server configured with SAS drives

could support 82 virtual desktop users, while configured with Samsung SSDs it

supported 160 virtual desktop users—95 percent more desktop users.
